What are your thoughts about the Nag Hammadi discoveries?
Here are the few things I know of the library of Nag Hammadi. Nag Hammadi is a town in Egypt. The library has a collection of ancient works that were discovered in the 1940’s. The discovery is known by several names: Nag Hammadi codices, Nag Hammadi library, and Nag Hammadi scrolls.
Some of the works discovered are: The Acts of Peter, The Acts of the Twelve Apostles, The Apocalypse of Adam, The Gospel of Phillip, The Gospel of Thomas (the only known complete copy of the text), and others.
While some find these an exciting historical discovery, the value I see in it is that we gain insight into “Gnostic teaching.” Gnostic teaching plagued the early church just as it does today. If we understand heresy as taught back then, it may help us deal with it better today.
