My Favorite Books

Beside the Bible, what books have influenced your life?

Great question, thanks for asking. I can’t articulate a list of books in a specific order, but the following works have had a dramatic impact on my life:

Happiness Is A Serious Problem, by Dennis Prager. Prager’s thesis in the book is that man has an obligation to his Creator and to his fellow human beings to be “happy” people.

Man’s Search for Meaning, by Victor Frankl. This book, written in 1946, depicts Frankl’s Holocaust experience and defines his therapeutic method of finding a reason for living.

A Code of Jewish Ethics (Vol. 1) You Shall Be Holy and (Vol. 2) Love Your Neighbor as Yourself, by Joseph Telushkin. Both of these volumes demonstrate the light of the Jewish part of our Judeo/Christian ethic in a time of impending darkness.

The Gulag Archipelago, by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. This book describes the courage of the human will in the face of evil. It has an uplifting message of the enduring human traits of peace and kindness.

Freedom of the Will, by Jonathan Edwards. Exploring the nature and state of man’s will, Edwards explains our great need of God’s grace for salvation.

The Cost of Discipleship, by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This book is challenging if for no other reason than Bonhoeffer’s compelling statement: “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.”
